5.3.07

I have two big projects coming to fruition in the next month, and I'm really eager to tell you about them.

First, I've been working for the last year on a piece for the incredible Los Angeles Master chorale with guest virtuoso Persian musicians Manoocheehr Sadeghi on santur and Pejman Hadadi on percussion. The new piece, Sang, will premiere at Disney Hall in Los Angeles on 3 and 7 June 2007, the second concert also being the inauguration of the celebrations of the 30th anniversary Chorus America conference. Learn more about it here, and join me in LA if you're anywhere in the neighborhood!

Before that, in New York City, Maya Beiser is having a CD release party at Joe's Pub on May 24th to celebrate the release of Almost Human, which features the piece I wrote for her: I am writing to you from a far off country. Maya will perform excerpts from the piece that night, and you can buy your copy at the show. Or click the link below to buy it from Amazon.

other fun stuff:

11 May 2007

Opus 21, the ASCAP/CMA Award-winning Michigan ensemble, is performing their Motown program at the Library on Congress, featuring my mashup Machaut in the Age of Motown along with pieces by Joe Hunter, Fred Hersch, Michael Daugherty, Richard Adams, Tom Knific, and Daniel Bernard Roumain. Check it out!

16/17 June 2007

The Orchestra of St. Luke's has organized a series of concerts called the Notable Women Festival, and it looks like fun. The concerts will be done first in NYC at the Chelsea Museum, and then repeated the next day up at DIA Beacon. The June 16/17 concerts feature Cave, along with music by Julia Wolfe, Pamela Z, Joan La Barbara, and Erin Watson. Check it out!

A recording of Not Worth, which was commissioned by NYC ensemble Sequitur for a cabaret devoted to the theme of money, is going to be released on Koch sometime soon. In the meantime, you can hear the mp3 on Sequitur's website. Scroll down a bit to find it.

I am really happy to tell you that my new CD, Tell the Birds, has been released by New World Records. The CD has recordings of The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, Creating the World, Robin Redbreast, Wonder Counselor, Landscaping for Privacy, and FlamingO. You can buy it directly from New World Records, or you can buy it here:

and if you like it (or even if you don't), I welcome you to post a review on Amazon to let others know what you think!

I'm traveling quite a bit lately: just got home from Greece, where we premiered a production of Choephorai (The Libation Bearers) of Aeschylus directed by Lee Breuer. My music was sung by Alexandra Montano, Mamak Khadem, and Eftichia Mitritsa, which was an altogether wonderful experience. I'm hoping this production will tour to a location near you SOON!

Next stop is Los Angeles, where I will begin work on a new choral piece for the Los Angeles Master Chorale with master Iranian instrumentalists Manoochehr Sadeghi and Pejman Hadadi. And then I head to Umbria for a residency at Civitella Ranieri, which I hope will be as fun and productive as it is beautiful.

In the meantime, plans are in the works to record I am writing to you from a far-off country, the piece I wrote for the outrageously excellent cellist Maya Beiser. Maya will also be performing the piece all over the place next season. If you look here for the concerts called Almost Human, those are opportunities for you to hear the piece.

And Mabou Mines' Dollhouse continues its journey around the world with performances in Israel, Hong Kong, and Australia. Check here for tour dates and more information.

Have a great summer!
