Eve--

Thanks so much for providing a forum for people's thoughts about this incredible event in all our lives. Two weeks or so before the end of our previous NY existence I began reading a book called Art and Fear; not a self-help book but rather a reflection on the difficulties of creating--why we need to, what stops us, etc. Since the attack I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling at times that our everyday tasks feel meaningless, often accomplished with lethargy or inertia if we can tackle them at all--for me this includes thoughts of making music. In thinking about getting back to creating, the irony is that it seems more important than ever, but I have less energy than ever to tackle it. It's just one of many battles to fight from here on out.

As for the butterfly, I don't know it's significance--but as I watched the burning towers and saw the ash and bits of life fall onto my roof in Brooklyn, I saw two deep-orange Monarchs flying against the backdrop of that painfully blue sky. It was an incredible clash, both in color and reality. I could only gape. A friend of mine, who practices Wicca, later said that butterflies represent souls...

Glad to have met you, to read the postings, and to hear that artists are beginning to make something beautiful out of the horror. What else can we do?

Please do let me know when you're playing.

Thanks again,
Perry [Norton]

dear perry,

yeah, the butterfly was for heather because she saw one fluttering, perhaps dying, as the FIRST plane passed over her head in washington mews as she was heading for work...

and the photo is for ansel as well because he gave me the ring I am wearing in the picture, and we hadn't seen each other since 9.11 (we had a playdate sunday, which I think we both needed....)

I am deeply amazed that you also saw butterflies during the attack.

[I met perry for the first time friday, when we were both doing data entry at the brooklyn red cross]
