I'm so shocked! Stockhausen a psychotic megalomaniac? Really? And his adjutants a bunch of sycophants? I never would have guessed. And the German press, a bunch of cold-blooded provocateurs? You must be mistaken! And Corigliano, a posturing opportunist? No! Say it ain't so!
But seriously. When John Lennon was murdered, someone stuck a mic in Paul McCartney's face for a reaction. All he could think to say was, "It's a drag," and Fleet Street had a field day. In this case, it would appear that no one actually thinks KS supports terrorism, they just think he's insane. So is this news? Is this an indictment of modernism, including EB (and EG)? I think not. Personally, I find the reporting of KS's comments to be collateral damage from a more disturbing trend: anything but simple jingoism is reviled. Any attempt to put this event in *any* context whatsoever is considered "apologizing for terrorism." (If you need footnotes for this assertion, I can supply them.) And I assume you're up-to-date on the whole Falwell/Robertson scatfest. This response has lately been attributed to Molly Ivins, though the underlying joke goes back to at least 1996: Q: Why did Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson get arrested for shaking hands in Richmond? A: Because in Virginia, it's illegal for a prick to touch an asshole.
