I'm not sure reading the Koran will provide an answer to what has occurred, any more than reading the Bible will explain the Crusades or the white Western attitude towards the Arab world.

What I find appalling is the ignornance and self-centeredness of our stupid, trivial, self-indulgent nation; How could they do this to us? Why do they hate us so much? Like jazz, if you have to ask, you'll never know.

But, thanks to the post-blast remarks of Falwell and Robertson, we know now the that the difference between a Christian fundamentalist and an Islamic fundamentalist is that the Christian fundamentalist has yet to hijack a plane.

I am sickened by the carnage, but I will not join in the jingoism, in the usual Yankee roll up the shirtsleeves and get the job done attitude. What about our side of the equation? Should we also consider that the American way of life perhaps is not what the world wants or needs?

This country is a jerry-rigged set of alliances between races and outlooks. The flag becomes a fetish because the sum of the nation is less than the parts.

Over the years I've come to recognize within myself an increasing inability to believe; and this horrible experience confirms my distaste for all sides, all beliefs. I don't want to take refuge in anyone's tidy answers, regardless the nobility of the system generating them.
