Dear Eve,

It's good to hear from you and know that you are safe. I've been dazed, and have found it hard to work. The hospitals, ready to deal with tens of thousands of casualties have not had to, and there has been little to do. I can't teach, as NYU is below 14th St.

Tomorrow is my birthday, but I've stopped any celebration, as my heart is not here, and it seems disrespectful. I can tell you that 7:30PM mass at St. Ignatius last night, usually poorly attended and lasting 30 minutes was like Easter Sunday morning, not a seat to be had and standees 6 deep in the back. And it lasted 90 minutes, and then people lingered. Our local firehouse lost 9 men, and is deluged with flowers, poems, cards. And a brass band drove up from Alabama this weekend, young kids, to serenade them.

I walked through Central Park yesterday with a friend. It was a beautiful day, and toddlers were toddling and dogs playing. But it was unreal, subdued and we are all just so very sad.

Love, Dena [Seiden]
