Dear Eve
First off, let me ask if those you know and love are safe? I make big assumptions stupidly. Like I don't know anyone in Finance therefore the same goes for anyone I know in fields unrelated to what went on as of a normal day at the Trade Center. I don't have time right now to give you the kind of response you deserve but let me tell you about two images that moved me over the past day or so. Last night after dark we drove past Bellevue. It was swarming with people in uniform -- police, whatever. Heavy duty flood lights illuminated the adjacent areas as if it were daylight. But what got to me most were the innumerable missing - person sheets posted on the fence of the hospital. Even the bus stop was totally papered. Then this morning I walked down 5th and was so gratified to see the Bergdorf Goodman had absolutely no merchandise in any of their windows. Only a black back drop in each, carrying a very large American flag. A bit further down Tiffanys had shuttered all their windows. Each one had a silver frame draped with a black ribbon and which enclosed an appropriate message of mourning. Cartiers did the same. The rest of the merchants were displaying their wares as usual. except amidst the merchandise there was usually an American flag. (I didn't get as far as Saks) Somehow these gestures are important to me. I was really offended on Saturday when Scott Simon on NPR decided to play Sinatra's New York, New York at top volume. I'm keeping a list. Rather like Santa Claus I guess. Much love Charlotte [Schwarz] |
